GAINESVILLE, Ga. (October 27, 2026) — Gainesville Theatre Alliance continues its 2026-27 Dream Boldly season with David Farr’s The Heart of Robin Hood Nov. 6-14 at the University of North Georgia-Gainesville’s Ed Cabell Theatre.
In Farr’s retelling of the familiar legend, Robin Hood is not yet the hero audiences expect. He and his band of outlaws may steal from the rich, but they have little interest in giving to the poor. As Prince John tightens his grip on the country, Marion refuses to stand by. She takes matters into her own hands, challenging Robin to look beyond himself and become the hero Sherwood needs.
First performed by the Royal Shakespeare Company at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon on Nov. 18, 2011, The Heart of Robin Hood combines adventure, humor, romance and onstage swordplay with a fresh perspective on one of the world’s most familiar legends.
GTA’s production is directed by Jacob Squire, assistant professor of theatre at the University of North Georgia, where he teaches acting and movement. For this production, Squire draws inspiration from the communal storytelling of Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, inviting audiences to become part of the world of the play rather than simply watching it from a distance.
“We approach the stage as a place where a merry company of players brings a world to life through bodies, movement, language, and imagination,” Squire said. “The forest and the court are not simply places we visit; they are worlds we create together.”
Beyond the adventure and spectacle, Squire said the play also asks audiences to consider what it takes for someone to become worthy of being called a hero.
“The show reminds us that goodness is not a title we earn once and carry forever. It is a choice we must continue to make,” Squire said.
The creative team includes Larry Cook as scenic designer, Shelby Ashley as lighting designer, Preston Goodson as sound designer, and April Andrew Carswell as costume designer.
The Heart of Robin Hood runs Nov. 6-14 at Ed Cabell Theatre on UNG’s Gainesville campus, with support from GTA Show Partner Jacobs Media. A free opening-night reception catered by Nothing Bundt Cakes will follow the Nov. 6 performance. Tickets and the full performance schedule are available at GainesvilleTheatreAlliance.org.
