Backstage Bootcamp is a free hands-on theatre design and production event for high school students and educators. Through interactive workshops led by GTA faculty, participants explore lighting, sound, costumes, stage management, scenic design, and more.

No previous experience oR training required!

All participants must register individually. Students under 18 must also have a parent or legal guardian complete the required Minor on Campus form as part of the registration process.

Workshop sessions

Students will choose two hands-on workshop sessions during registration. Workshop availability may vary by session.

Workshop offerings are subject to change.

  • Explore the foundations of stage lighting, including how lighting choices support mood, visibility, focus, and storytelling on stage.

  • Learn practical strategies for creating period-inspired costume looks while working with limited time, materials, and production budgets.

  • Practice basic wig styling and maintenance techniques while learning how wigs support character, period, and production design.

  • Learn the core responsibilities of a stage manager, including communication, organization, rehearsal support, and keeping a production on track.

  • Explore the basics of mixing sound for live theatre and musicals, including balance, clarity, timing, and supporting performers.

  • Get an introduction to Vectorworks, a drafting and design software used to create technical drawings for theatre production.

  • Learn basic scenic construction concepts, including flats, platforms, materials, assembly, and painting techniques, while building a miniature set.

  • Explore practical ways to promote theatre productions, reach audiences, and create simple marketing materials with limited time and budget.

  • Learn basic practices for selecting, storing, maintaining, and safely handling theatrical weapons and weapon props for the stage.

  • Practice practical knots used in backstage and production settings, with a focus on safe and effective stagecraft applications.

  • Learn how to prepare college theatre applications, including audition materials, portfolios, interviews, and ways to research theatre programs.
